Thanksgiving was so much fun! We loved getting to spend time with Taffy, Papa, Aunt Milly, Uncle Andy and Lucy. The party never ended.

Jake put a slight kink in our plans by deciding not to take a nap. The whole trip. Like, not even one. Seriously? He was not having it and with two of them in there we can't let him make too much noise, because Miles really really wanted his naps. It was problematic because he was very tired but just would. not. fall. asleep. He also decided to do quite a bit of waking up throughout the night. And he was up by 6 am each day. So, the trip really was great, but that was challenging and actually cut our trip a bit short. We actually had some really fun times with Jake while Miles was napping. It was fun to get to play with him on his own. I think in the end he was just weighing his options...hmmm...should he take a nap or go play with all four adults focusing their attention on him? It just caught up with him and he started to get super tired from the sleep deficit, so we headed home Saturday.

Here are some hi-lights.

What a weekend!

Today Peter and I have been married for six years. I can't believe it. Sometimes it feels like it's barely been a year and sometimes it feels like it's been 10...just kidding! It has been a wonderful 6 years and I'm so lucky to be married to him! We celebrated on Saturday night with dinner out and earlier that day he booked me a massage. What an awesome day! We have had a couple of digital video tapes sitting around of our wedding ceremony and reception that were taken by a coworker of mine at the time, the photographer at the newspaper where I worked. Because they were in a digital tape format we were never able to watch them. Peter tracked them down and had them converted into a dvd and when I came downstairs yesterday we were on tv, walking down the aisle. I was in shock! It was so fun to watch, I was crying and the boys were so excited to be seeing all of their family members on tv. What an amazing surprise. I'm going to watch it over and over.

Granny (Gi-gi) was in town this weekend as well and celebrated a birthday on Saturday. The boys were in heaven with her around and we also got to spend some time with Robyn, Harlan and the Strelitz-Block clan. I wasn't there the whole time so I didn't get many pictures. The boys really wanted to get something special for Granny and they decided on two Elmo balloons (uniting two of their favorite things). They graciously offered to take care of them in case she left them behind. Miles is obsessed with his balloon. Will. Not. Put. It. Down. It has been so funny. At breakfast he fed Elmo pancakes, he read books with him, played with his trucks with him, and so on. Jake didn't want too much to do with him. Today we had a lunch out with the boys and Granny and Peter and I were barely hanging in there. Our dinner went kind of late and we were super tired today. Jake and Miles quickly honed in on that and made us work- especially at lunch. They (mostly Jake) were being hilariously naughty...little smirky grins the whole time. If it was a glimpse of what lies ahead, we have our work cut out for us. Lots of shrieking, giggling, head-butting, grabbing anyone's food they could get their hands on, trying to wriggle out of the booster seat...and on and on and on. But they had a great time, and that's what counts.

Happy six years!

Wasps much?

Before anyone says anything...I realize that taking this picture was probably not one of the smartest things I have ever done. But I also feel the need to add that I have a nice zoom lens. Peter was replacing some outside bulbs this afternoon and just before he stuck his hand in this light fixture, for some unknown reason, he took a peek. And this is what he saw. I found a couple of wasps in our kitchen a week or so ago but was unable to find a nest. Here it is. In the light fixture right outside the kitchen. So scary. He was able to spray it and get rid of them without getting stung. We counted 30 wasps. Just thought I'd share. Thank goodness he didn't put his hand in there.

Bouncing Around the Room...again...

Today at gym class there was a bouncy house! I thought it was so cute and immediately grabbed my camera to capture their first encounter with a bouncy house. Turns out I had to force them both in there and they lasted about 5 seconds. They did like the slide but that was about it. Maybe it will grow on them?? I did catch a quick picture of each of them.

18 Months!

18 months old?!? How did that happen. Here is where we are right now...

They are so much fun! They are really developing quite the personalities and quite the relationship with each other. They share toys (they also fight over toys), the play hide and seek, peek-a-boo, chase, and they really crack each other up. They LOVE making each other laugh and once they find something (even if it's running into the wall again and again...seriously) they will exhaust it. Sometimes I have no idea what is going on between them but they seem to pretty much be on the same page.

Jake is turning out to be every bit as sensitive as Miles. He is so attached to dada, mama and Miles. The other night we had him down in bed with us when he was sick and he just kept saying "Miii" (Miles) over and over. He was distraught not to be with him. We compromised by letting him hold the monitor and watch Miles sleeping - that did the trick. He often demonstrates concern for Miles. Right when they wake up from their nap he starts trying to make sure Miles has a blanket and whenever he picks up two similar toys he always takes one over and offers it to his brother. He is also a little bit ornery. Jake frequently tackles Miles for one of two reasons... he either wants a big kiss or to steal his toy. He loves to put on a show, right now he likes to stomp around (one leg comes way up high and 'stomps' down on the ground), back up with tiny baby steps or turn circles. As he's doing his moves he looks up and gives you a sly little sweet smile. He'll be the one to get them OUT of trouble later in life. Jake loves books and has very strong opinions about which books he's interested in. He will march up to me, hand me a book, say 'read' ("reee") and plop down in my lap. And despite how much he loves Miles, he is not at all interested in sharing a lap with him. He tries to repeat much of what is said to him, but with his own touch - that is hilarious. You never know what is going to get him going. Sometimes he's just sitting in the backseat, repeating something from earlier in the day (today it was "WOW!") over and over, while cracking up. As a result he usually cracks Miles up as well. Flirting with strange women around town is still a favorite pastime and he works hard to get people to look at him when we're out. He is so sweet and loves to give us hugs and kisses, even eskimo kisses. It makes my heart melt. But he definitely keeps a balance between the sweet and feisty. Today when I was telling him a story before his nap he looked up at me, gave me a completely unsolicited kiss, then reared back and head-butted my nose so hard that it started bleeding a little bit.

Miles has taken off and is not looking back. He is still the man of extremes that he's always been. Lucky for me he is mostly extremely happy. And silly. And ridiculously adorable. He has an endless supply of energy and that is the first thing people comment on when they spend an extended period of time with him. He spends a large portion of his day running laps around things (the couch, the kitchen island, the length of the porch, etc.), stopping only for a giggle or a smile. He loves it when people chase him and just wishes that Jake had a longer attention span for that. Miles has a surprisingly long attention span and when he gets interested in something he sticks with it for quite a while. He LOVES books. First thing in the morning he won't let us pick him up out of his crib...he bobs, weaves, doges your grab and wriggles out of your grasp. All he wants is a few books and some time to chill so he can wake up on his own. He will sit in bed, flip through the books, give you a running narrative of what he's looking at, and he's happy. At night time and nap time right now he prefers to curl up in his chair instead of a lap (this is new and a little bit of a bummer because I love cuddle time). It seems to settle him to just have his space a little bit. He gives great little smooches, but it's hard to get him to slow down enough for too much of that! He always gives me great big toothy grins, he is a complete giggle box and loves to be tickled. Any time I do something he says "gee gee gee" (again). He is so so so curious, determined and stubborn. When he wants to do something he is going to find a way. He plays super hard, but every so often he just curls up on your lap and sucks his thumb...takes a few minutes to recharge and then he's off again.

They are both great eaters still. Favorites include eggs, pb&j, grilled cheese, veggie burger, tofu, mac & cheese, english muffin pizza, veggie meatballs (thank you costco), sweet potatoes, green beans, peas, butternut squash, carrots, apples, berries, pears, banana, pancakes, smoothies, cheese, and pretty much any variety of crackers. We're still working on the spoon & fork thing but we've pretty much got plates and bowls down. We're also working on having patience while I prepare their meals as opposed to trying to physically climb up my legs and push me around a bit. Sometimes they get a little frantic - not because they are starving but because I'm focused on something else. We're also really working on (i.e. struggling with) them walking along side us, following along, holding my hand, etc. It will be really great when I don't have to use the stroller ALL the time to transport them from the car inside, etc. So many people say "oh yes, we have that problem too" and then they see me release my boys from the stroller, immediately dart off in opposite directions and they say "wow, they really take off." They really are talking up a storm, trying to repeat much of what is said to them and retaining so many words. There is no better sound than their voices, whether it is a sentence of babble or one word repeated over and over. Both boys are experiencing some hard core separation anxiety. We'll see how this progresses in the near future. It's challenging for them and for us. We have definitely been dealing with the typical patches of rough toddler stuff, but it seems like we are working some of it out. (Here is a great website that has some wonderful information http://www.earlyparenting.com/ - some of it is a little touchy feely for me, but for the most part it is very helpful). One of the main challenges for me is finding things that we can do that are fun for them but where I can still safely take them by myself. Our current favorites are the bookstore train table and the neighborhood playground.

I just started typing and realized that I have written a whole novel. This is the only record keeping, baby book that I keep, so it's as much for me as it is for anyone reading. I'm sure this post is more than you could ever possibly want to know about what is going on in the Strelitz house right now!

I honestly can't believe that Miles and Jake are 18 months old. Wow. We have been in and out of the doctor's office over the past week so we weren't thrilled to be going back for a well check. It turns out that Jake is still fighting some stuff off. Recently he has had a double eye infection, double ear infection, a nasty cold that started to work its way into his lungs and a little bit of croup mixed in there. Poor little guy. We have been back on breathing treatments, sitting in steamy bathrooms and doing whatever we can to make him feel a little better. When we went back in today all is well except for a lingering cough and a gross ear infection - the pressure built up so much that it was leaking out of his ear (sorry if that was an overshare). I just feel so badly for them when they are sick. We got him some antibiotics this time and hopefully we'll knock it out.

Aside from that, they are doing wonderfully! They are tipping the scales at 28 lbs, 4 oz (Jake) & 26 lbs, 13 oz (Miles), both fully clothed, and both measure 33 inches tall. That puts them in the 75% for both of those categories. Dr. Norton said that their speech seems to be a little bit ahead of the curve for their age and that they are both strong, happy boys. They demonstrated a little bit of brotherly love for her when Jake body-slammed Miles into the floor. Even though Miles was clearly not happy about it we all had a little giggle. A couple of shots later we were out of there. Here they are horsing around while we waited for her to come check us out...

Boys weekend

What a busy weekend! The lovely McGill family came for a visit and we had so much fun. It was awesome to see the boys play together and great to get to hang out. Jake has been a little under the weather, but aside from a trip to the doctor's office it was all fun. He has a cold that has migrated to his lungs, a cough and an eye infection. Yuck.

We played, ate, rode the Zilker train, went to the playground, caught up on some game time and even slept a little bit. Here are some pictures of everyone...

Hats

We are still into hats around here so I thought I would post a picture of a couple of interesting hats that they wore today.

Jake is practicing for Thanksgiving (you might see this one again...it was so cute it had to come home with us). Notice Miles grinning in the background. It doesn't look like it in this picture but Jake actually liked the turkey hat.
Miles. Strainers always make good hats.

Best visit to HEB ever!

The other day we went to the grocery store and just as we were walking into the store a fire truck pulled up. Of course the boys were fascinated. They love them from afar and seeing one close-up was quite the event. They weren't sure how to react. Then the firemen invited them to check out the truck and even gave them 'Junior Fire Chief' badges. Wow. They were so nice. Miles was not into being in the truck without one of us, so we also got to check it out. If I had known that we were going to run into a group of firemen I may have done a little more than roll out of bed and go.

A visit from Taffy

Taffy came to visit for a few days and it was awesome! Jake and Miles had so much fun with her and so did I! I had a doctor's appointment on Tuesday and she watched the boys while I was there, other than that we just played. I already posted the pictures from the haircut and I didn't get many more pictures than that, but here are a few... We had a little bit of excitement this afternoon when our yard service came to cut our grass. The boys and I were playing in the living room and one of the guys knocked on the back door with a question. I stepped outside of the door for a split second (they were glued to the glass door, waiting for me to come back, so I was still right there watching them) and I heard a click right after I stepped out. They had promptly locked the door while trying to open it and I was locked out. Thankfully the front door was unlocked because we had a plumber in and out fixing a toilet (that is a whole other story) so I ran around the house and came in the front. Jake didn't seem to notice that I had been missing but Miles was upset. And I was a little shaken (what if the front had not been unlocked???). They keep me on my game.

The really do LOVE it when the yard service comes. Back and forth on the ride-on mower. I think we could watch it for hours.

Haircut...take two...

The first time we took the boys to get their hair cut it was kind of a nonevent. We went to a very cool and hip barber shop...too cool and hip to bother much with a toddler hair cut. As a result we were left with barbers who were slightly nervous about cutting their hair and didn't really do much. Lately their hair has been difficult to keep out of their eyes and seems to really bother them. So...we tried again today. This time we went to Kid Cuts. That place was ready. There was a train table to play with while they waited, race car chairs, Elmo on the tv...it doesn't get much better than that. Except that someone forgot to tell Miles how cool it was. He. Freaked. Out. I mean really freaked out. Jake was fine, until he saw his brother one car over having a complete breakdown. It all started when the stylist sprayed his hair with water. And it didn't end until he was out of the chair and happily playing with the train table again. As a result I didn't get many pictures, but I had to document the occasion. Luckily my mom was with me because it was a two person job today! I'll get some pictures tomorrow of their cute little faces...you can actually see them now that their hair is a little shorter!

The calm before the storm. Happily playing with trains.

Jake showing off his very own comb. He showed his stylist a few things about combing his hair.
This is the early stage of the breakdown. Mother of the year right here...my child was melting down and I was snapping away.
Gripping the steering wheel.

The train table at Kid Cuts was their second of the day. We stopped in at Barnes and Nobel earlier for another train visit. (I don't know why these pictures turned out yellow.)

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween! We had a great day and the boys had tons of fun! Granny (or "Gi-gi," pronounced with a soft 'g,' as Jake and Miles call her) came for a visit and somehow we didn't get any pictures of her with the little guys...too busy having fun. They really loved having her here! We went out for breakfast at Einstein's Bagels, then hung out at Aunt Phili's for a little while, then went to watch Jude's soccer game (where Jake and Miles got to do their favorite thing...run around in some wide open fields), came home for a quick nap, then headed right back out for a neighborhood Halloween party. We went the lazy route as far as costumes went. I knew they would barely stay in them anyways and I didn't want to be wrestling them in and out of an elaborate costume. So they went as Super-Jake and Super-Miles.

After we got our heroes to bed Peter and I went to a Halloween party with some friends and Granny babysat for us. So nice!
